Welcome to Pennington's! (And Rachel Brimble!)

My name is Rachel Brimble and I live in a small market town near the beautiful city of Bath. Married to the best man in the world for twenty years, we have two teenage daughters and a mad chocolate Labrador called Tyler. When I’m not working, I like to read, knit, watch far too much TV and take long walks in the country.

I’ve been writing since my youngest daughter started school full-time in 2005 and since then have had eight novels and two novellas published with small presses, eight romances and romantic suspense novels published with Harlequin Superromance (the Templeton Cove Stories), as well as four Victorian novels with Kensington.

All these books were contracted by American publishers and I have a fabulously devoted readership across the pond as well as here in the UK. Writing is my absolute joy and something I need to do. You only have to ask my children and husband what sort of person I become when I go without writing for more than a couple of days!

I am thrilled to be starting a new journey with the Aria family! Having signed a four-book deal for my brand-new Edwardian series set against the backdrop of Bath’s finest department store, I cannot wait for these books to be written and published. It is wonderful to be working with a UK publisher as it means, for the first time in my career, I can speak face to face with my editor.

Aria was recommended to me by a fellow author of my local Romantic Novelists Association chapter, Fay Keenan, who already has two books published with them. Her enthusiasm for her editor and the marketing and publicity departments was palpable. It wasn’t long before I decided to submit my latest historical manuscript, the first in what I planned to be an ongoing series, via Aria’s website submission portal.

That was at the beginning of December 2017 and by the end of January 2018, I received a lovely email from Caroline Ridding at Aria asking me what else I had planned to write. I told her that I was halfway through the second book… she then asked me for an outline of book three.

Through a slightly panicked, but excited, fog I came up with a rough outline for the third book and sent that, along with a synopsis for book two to Caroline.

A few days later, Caroline and I spoke on the phone and within minutes, I was overwhelmed with how easily Caroline understood my vision for the series and seemed equally as excited as me about the possibilities we could uncover at Pennington’s Department Store.

She soon told me that she’d love to offer me a contract but needed to speak to the Aria board first.

An excruciating but, thankfully, short wait ensued, and then the offer of a four-book deal dropped into my inbox from Caroline.

To say I was happy is the biggest understatement ever!

Now, just two months later, it is time for the big cover reveal for The Mistress of Pennington’s and I am absolutely thrilled with it.

This book was a joy to write and I love that the heroine, Elizabeth Pennington, is so beautifully portrayed on the cover. Elizabeth is a strong woman fighting for her rightful place as the heiress to the Pennington’s empire, despite her father’s belief that a woman could not possibly succeed him and maintain Pennington’s place at the top of Bath’s retail ladder.

The Mistress of Pennington’s starts the series with a big enough bang that I hope readers will fall in love with, not only Elizabeth, but also Joseph Carter, the man who appears so suddenly in Elizabeth’s life. Their coming together is an exciting journey and one that will change them both irrevocably.

With book two written and plans for book three in the very early stages, I can firmly say that the series theme is equality and women’s progression throughout the early 20th century. Each book will focus on the life, changes and development of the female protagonist as well as introducing readers to other characters at the store, and their lives, as they work alongside one another at Pennington’s.

The scope for the series is huge and I am super excited about what new aspects I can bring to the characters and the store, as well as ensuring the running threads throughout the books are also enjoyed and remembered.

Welcome to Pennington’s!
